10 Best-Dressed Stars At The 2022 BAFTAs
Our favourite celebs really kept the fashion coming at the 75th edition of the major awards ceremony.
Awards season is in full swing, and it was London's turn to host the stars this time. Britain’s biggest red-carpet event, the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) returned in all its glory with an in-person show on Sunday. Taking place at the Royal Albert Hall, the beloved precursor to the Oscars was the star-studded spectacle we love to see while the year’s top film performances are honoured.
For the 75th annual event, which kicked off with a “James Bond” theme performance by Shirley Bassey to mark the franchise’s 60th anniversary, the nominees and presenters seriously turned up the glamour volume. Sumptuous velvet was a clear favourite on the big night while frothy tulle, taffeta and opera length evening gloves also made their mark. And due to attendees being advised to ‘dress respectably’ because of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, black and other dark colours dominated. However, there were pops of colour, including yellow and blue, nods to the Ukrainian flag.
Lady Gaga dazzled in a velvet curve-hugging forest green custom Ralph Lauren Collection gown, which took150 hours to make, according to the brand. The tumbling Old Hollywood-style gown has a plunging V neckline and back, plus a standout silk train. Nominated for Leading Actress for her role in “House of Gucci,” the multi-hyphenate also donned matching diamond and emerald Tiffany & Co. jewellery, a feather evening bag and signature platform boots.
Presenter Emma Watson looked magical in a custom autumn 2022 Oscar de la Renta gown with a plunging black velvet halter top and white tiered tulle skirt that lengthened into a princess train behind. The “Harry Potter” star accessorised with a white embroidered clutch, black heels with beaded wrap-around ankle straps and chandelier earrings.
Supporting Actress winner Ariana DeBose was walking on sunshine in a strapless custom yellow Oscar de la Renta gown. The vibrant chiffon draped dress, which has an up-to-here slit and beaded cayenne gardenia appliqué at the waist, mirrors the dress her “West Side Story” character Anita wears while singing “America.” She paired it with cherry red Stuart Weitzman ankle-strap heels and gorgeous Bvlgari diamond openwork earrings in white gold.
“House of Gucci” star Salma Hayek naturally looked to the luxury Italian fashion house and the result was perfection. She stepped out looking regal in a custom deep purple velvet column gown with a revealing sweetheart neckline. She completed the black lace-lined dress, which featured a thigh-high slit, long sleeves and standout shoulders, with diamond rings and statement earrings by Boucheron. For footwear, Hayek went for towering silky black platform pumps.
Leading Actress nominee Emilia Jones was a golden goddess in a stunning metallic Atelier Versace gown. The floor-length plissé number comes with a key-hole detail, cinched in waist, flowy pleated skirt, low back and a crisscrossed halter neckline. The breakout “CODA” star, who performed during the ceremony, teamed her gown with sky-high coordinating gold heels and subtle gold jewellery.
Daisy Ridley looked out of this world in a black Vivienne Westwood gown. It featured a sexy off-the-shoulder bodice, a nod to Westwood’s iconic corsets, and dramatic tulle skirt that puffed out in layers, adorned with subtle sequin detailing. The “Star Wars” actor said the romantic dress was created by combining elements of two other dresses. Ridley, who presented at the ceremony, opted for matching black heels, stud earrings, gold and diamond rings and a sparkling emerald pendant necklace as accessories.
Host Rebel Wilson was the undisputed princess of the BAFTAs in a strapless, frothy spring 2019 Giambattista Valli Couture gown. Drenched in tiers of black tulle, the flirty off-the-shoulder dress features a satin bow at the waist and glittering blue sequins on the bodice. The comedian’s ethereal look, styled by Elizabeth Stewart, was complemented with Bvlgari drop earrings.
All eyes were on Daisy Edgar-Jones, who stepped out in a beautiful shimmering sea-green flapper-style custom Gucci gown. The “Normal People” actor’s dress comes with cascading fringed beading and a plunging neckline. Styled by Nicky Yates, Edgar-Jones also wore some jewellery from Tiffany & Co, including a bracelet, rings and earrings.
Naomi Campbell proved she’s still killing the fashion game in a black velvet Burberry gown. The dress features a wide square ruffled neckline, lettuce hemming and long, ruffled winged sleeves. A mini train also helped the model extraordinaire stand out as she posed on the red carpet. The all-black look included Burberry pumps, which peeped under the hemline, however Campbell did add a pop of colour with green jewels on her wrist and ears.
Léa Seydoux pulled out all the style stops in a glitzy custom black and silver strapless Louis Vuitton number with matching sleeves. The show-stopping embellished floor-length gown is embroidered with sequins, crystals and metallic threads, and has a black sheer panel just above the waist and low-cut sweetheart neckline. The Bond girl added sparkling pendulum earrings and rings from the Louis Vuitton high jewellery collection and silver footwear.
