Saudi Delegation Heads to New York for Key Political Forum on Sustainable Development

From July 9 to 18, Saudi Arabia will take part in the United Nation’s (UN) Political Forum on Sustainable Development, a high-level annual event established in 2012 for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Kingdom’s delegation, which will be led by the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP), comprises government- and private-sector entities and representatives of charitable associations

SDGs are 17 global goals the world’s nations are committed to achieving by 2030. In order to reach these goals, countries have to accomplish 169 targets that cover social, environmental, and economic development issues including poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanization, environment, and social justice.

This year’s theme, “Transformation Towards Sustainable And Resilient Societies,” focuses on six SDGs:

  • Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  • Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
  • Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  • Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns
  • Protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial; ecosystems, managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation and preventing the loss of biodiversity
  • Strengthening the means of implementation and revitalisation of global partnership for sustainable development

Faisal Al Ibrahim, Vice Minister of MEP, said, “We look forward to our active participation by presenting Saudi Arabia’s first Voluntary National Review on the progress made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals… Saudi Vision 2030 and its various programmes are aligned to a considerable extent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); we are systematically progressing in achieving these goals in collaboration with the international community.”
