Leen Al-Tamimi: The Young, Bold Saudi Female in the UN Youth Delegate Program

Leen Al-Tamimi made headlines when she participated in the UN Youth Ambassador Program.

“Although what I said was little, I cannot express my happiness as I represented my country” she said.
Al-Tamimi has participated in four sessions at the UN discussing education, turning ideas into reality, convincing the private sector to be part of the country’s development program, and a session addressing UN projects which the Kingdom may be part of.

Al-Tamimi is a young, passionate Business Management student at AlFaisal Universty and plans to complete her master’s degree in International Relations and become an ambassador in the near future. “I have long been passionate about international relations,” said Al-Tamimi who traveled alone, for the first time to take part in the UN Youth Ambassador Program.

Among the different sessions provided at the UN, education stands out the most for Al-Tamimi, “I believe that each child has the right to get a quality education. Education it is not just a responsibility of the country but also a responsibility of parents, teachers and we all play a role in it,” she explained.

Being part of this global gathering Al-Tamimi recognized that people knew little about the Kingdom and the majority of the information they get doesn’t represent the real Saudi Arabia, “I had to answer questions about how we live and I would just stand there and tell them I am example in front of you. I tried to show them the late changes in the Kingdom and the vision which will change the kingdom over the coming 10 years.”

Leen says she doesn’t blame those attending the sessions for not knowing much about Saudi Arabia because she feels that the media doesn’t expose its audiences to accurate information about the Kingdom, “I discussed with other youths the true and positive side of the Kingdom and that was my mission,” she added. Aside from that, the young student says she has gained much knowledge from the sessions and has managed to build her networks.

She now uses her Snapchat account to increase awareness among youths and share knowledge and calls on them to be the change they want. She said that the youth of Saudi Arabia should know that “they are the base for any movement in the society, they are capable of taking initiatives, being creative and leading change.” When asked about her ambitions, Al-Tamimi replied, “I would repeat this experience again but on a bigger scale as I will one day be an ambassador or I will represent the Kingdom in the UNICEF.”
