About Her Wins Best Digital News Start-up at WAN-IFRA Awards

About Her was named Best Digital News Start-up at the 2018 Middle East Digital Media Awards. The awards ceremony, run by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), honors the best innovative and new projects in the global digital publishing field.

WAN-IFRA’s Digital Media Awards are one of the most prestigious recognitions of best-practice innovation in digital publishing worldwide. About Her’s accolade was presented to the platform’s Editor-in-Chief Mohammed Fahad Al-Harthi in Dubai.

The honor comes as About Her celebrates its one-year anniversary, making it a wonderful culmination of the past 12 months that have been dedicated todocumenting and sharing the journey ofadvancement and growth that the Kingdom’s women have embarked on. The past year has indeed been a groundbreaking one as more and more Saudi women take the lead, becoming the driving force behind the country’s trajectory and future development.

Launched in January 2017, About Her is a digital platform supported by a regional team that has been working diligently to provide a more diverse, richer, and nuanced image of today’s Saudi woman than what has been traditionally portrayed by Western media.

Through award-winning features, news pieces, profiles, inspirational interviews, and its 100 Leading Saudi Women list, the portal has spent its first year offering an intimate look into the lives of Saudi and Arab women, as well as continually seeking to unearth and celebrate home-grown and international talents.

Bestowing praise on his team’s efforts over the past year and acknowledging that this has indeed been the year of the Saudi woman, Al-Harthi said, “Every single team member of About Her believes in shining the spotlight on the accomplishments of talented women across the Kingdom. We understand how vital it is to nurture their drive, passions, and vison, as these women have been working with an admirable determination to break barriers not only for themselves but for all of us as well. Today, by taking home this honor, we are also celebrating their strength. We hope to continue with them on their inspirational journey for many more years to come.”

Over the past year, Saudi Arabia has undergone a transformative change that has been made possible by its Vision 2030, a national strategy spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman that aims to diversify its economy. A key pillar of the Kingdom’s vision has been the empowerment of its women through improving their rights, emphasizing their importance and contributions in the growth and development of the country, and creating more opportunities across industries and sectors for them to shine.
