Misk Art Week Kickstarts And Here's What You Need To Know

Misk Art Institute’s annual leading event is back with its sixth edition, and this is why you need to start marking your calendars. Misk Institute has always been an integral part in the kingdom’s cultural and artistic events, with its interactive programs, masterclasses, talk and more.

For this year, Misk Art Week’s theme is nostalgia and how it seeps into art and design, and its different interpretations. Once of its most interesting classes, that has recently got a lot of buzz, is the Life Painting Class.

This class was supervised by Huthaifa Hejazi, a Saudi artist that has been commissioned to lead those classes and oversee the work of aspirant Saudi and international artists.

Hejazi spoke to Arab News about the classes, where she expressed her excitement for the community to experience something like this, “It is a big step for us to host live painting and drawing here, and I am trying to do everything I can to support the community.” One of her students also chimed in stating that, “This is a new experience for us; life drawing helps you better your skills.”

This gathering garnered so much attention that it became one of the most popular events to be held at Misk Art Week. The cool thing about this is that it is completely free and open to the public! Democratizing access to art and these types of experiences is what gives this event an unsurpassed standard in the kingdom, and even regionally at times.

Another much-anticipated part of the event is the Misk Art Grant, where an award of 1 million SAR is given to 6 artists that hail from the Arab world. This award helps up-and-coming artists to launch their careers and get the regional platform they need to be recognized. ?

This year the competition asked participants to create work that centers around SARAAB, an Arabic word that translates to mirage in English. The artists were asked to “reflect on the relationship between movement and memory and the subtle thread that intertwines the concepts of ‘invisible’ and ‘visible’.”

Since its inception, Misk Institute has long bene shaping the art and cultural scene in Saudi Arabia and has been introducing the region to talented professionals in art and design.
