Nails Trends for Summer 2022

Summer is here and one thing is certain: we’ll all be outdoors dressed in flowy dresses and sandals, enjoying long days at the beach, brunches and barbeques, or sunset drinks. It’s time to plan some summer nail art. Not only does a fresh manicure look great wrapped around a frozen drink, but a set of snazzy nails can quickly get you in the right mood for hot summer days. Trade in those wintery navy blues, maroons, and reds and channel the inner you with bright summer colors, pastels and nudes.

The Color Blocking

According to TZR (Thezoereport) Y2K fashion is back in full swing, and celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippman predicts nails will follow suit. “Rose-colored glasses, crop tops, space buns, and baggy jeans have made a comeback from Y2K,” she states. “For nails that means we’re bringing out the space-age nail polish with multi-faceted shimmers, color travel, and cosmic colors.”

The Bright Colors

As published in Byrdie magazine, prepare to see plenty of almond shapes and saturated colors this summer. According to Nailcon Founder Jazmin Celine Gresham, “The almond shape has become the new square and has been everyone’s go-to shape.”

The Multicolor Geodes

Top of the list for the must-have nail color for summer 2022 is neon red, which should be painted in a simple bright color block.

The Pink Ombré

Next are the bright colors such as electric and cobalt blues, vivid orange, and ombré pink designs. Neon shades, which are on the verge of a comeback, are also the perfect adornment this summer. No matter what color you choose, your nails may showcase either a single color, ombré, or a rainbow finish.

The Neons

If vivid colors are not your thing then pastels are the way to go: soft pink, pale blue, and mint green are all good choices.

Nude shades are gaining popularity as well. Keep it simple with minimal effort and customize using art decals.

The Natural

Some trends emerge season after season and there’s nothing quite like a classic French manicure: the epitome of simplicity and sophistication. This summer, French tips reign supreme, but not as you know them. We are seeing twists on the classic manicure, from slanted tips, alternative French, upside down French, cute pastel tips, double tips and more.

Another popular trend is color-blocked tips also known as skittle nails, and of course coordinating cuticle decals and negative space.

The New French

Fashion houses have been nostalgic as of late and taken inspiration from decades gone by. Nail design has followed suit taking inspiration from the resurgence of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. As the 70’s gave us swirls and the 80’s gave the bold, bright, and color-clashing, we are now seeing designs such as bright neon zebra and clashes of pink and orange which scream Club Tropicana vibes. The 90’s inspired us with ditsy florals, checkerboards, polka dots, cherries and smiley faces. These are also being incorporated into manicure designs.

Summer nail art doesn’t stop at color and pattern though; prepare to take it to the next level with some heavy metal via chrome and metallic finishes, nail piercings (yes you read that correctly!), 3D flowers, nail jewels and bubble texture.

The 70’s Inspired

All in all, the motto for the summer is think out of the box and go wild because everything and anything goes. From basic manicures, acrylic, gel and dip powder to classic French manicures, subtle ombrés, detailed nail art and seasonally suitable neons, there’s a little something for every taste.
