AlUla Signs Deal to Launch Tram Line Connecting Landmarks and Heritage Sites

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has announced its plan to bring a tram line, which will connect to some of Saudi Arabia's most iconic landmarks and heritage sites. This is in agreement with SYSTRA, a multinational engineering and consultancy firm known for specializing in public transport and mobility solutions.

Tramway tracks are implemented for light railways, which are a popular means of transportation with low emissions. When completed, the Saudi region of AlUla is expected to implement a 50-kilometer tramway system, connecting AlUla International Airport to the historical site of Hegra. According to the RCU, we should expect the completion of its initial phase by 2023.

The tramway project is also part of "The Journey Through Time" masterplan, which aims to showcase AlUla, its heritage and culture to tourists. This is part of Saudi Arabia's ambition to become a top tourism destination in the Middle East, and a part of its Vision 2030 program aimed at diversifying the economy.

In fact, AlUla has several well-known landmarks loved by tourists, including the Hegra ruins, Elephant Rock, and more. It is also home to a rising contemporary art scene, functions as an open museum, and makes a great destination for uninterrupted stargazing. Hence, adding a tramway system will make it easier for tourists to thoroughly explore "The World's Masterpiece."

"AlUla has proven that it is at the center of everyone's attention, and planning in AlUla affects financial, environmental, and energy sustainability as well," Amr Al Madani, the CEO of RCU, stated about the recent partnership with SYSTRA.

As part of improving and easing travel to and within AlUla, there are plans to increase domestic flights throughout the summer season. Indeed, AlUla is currently set to receive three weekly Saudia flights from Riyadh starting in August; except on Fridays, daily flights from Jeddah as of July; and direct flights from Dammam as of August. In addition, Flynas is offering domestic flights from Riyadh every Sunday, as well as international flights from the UAE.
