The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s First Official Portrait

What are your thoughts?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have had their first joint portrait unveiled on the 23rd of June at the University of Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, England.

The portrait depicts the royal couple standing side-by-side gazing away. Kate wore a demure emerald green dress from Brighton-based Indie brand: The Vampire’s Wife, paired with glamourous Manolo Blahnik Hangisi green satin pumps. She accessorized the look with pearl and diamond earrings that previously belonged to Princess Diana and a three-strand pearl bracelet. For the first time she is also seen wearing the Duchess of Cambridge brooch. William on the other hand is wearing a streamlined classic dark suit and blue tie.

The piece was commissioned in 2021 by the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund and painted by award winning British artist Jamie Coreth. William and Kate’s titles are the region’s namesake and therefore the artist decided to honor the city by deriving the tones and colors of its ancient stone buildings and incorporating them into the background.

Coreth expressed his feelings on painting the artwork as the greatest privilege of his life.

He stated "I wanted to show Their Royal Highnesses in a manner where they appeared both relaxed and approachable, as well as elegant and dignified." He also said "As it is the first portrait to depict them together, and specifically during their time as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I wanted the image to evoke a feeling of balance between their public and private lives. The piece was commissioned as a gift for the people of Cambridgeshire, and I hope they will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed creating it."

The portrait will be available for viewing by members of the public for three years at the esteemed University of Cambridge. It will then be loaned to the National Portrait Gallery for its reopening in 2023.
