Life has just become much easier for shoppers in the UAE who are trying to lead a more sustainable, healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle. Carrefour has opened the doors to its first BIO store in the emirates, helping those who are actively seeking to make wholesome choices. The one-stop store also boasts an indoor hydroponic farm to support farm-to-table lifestyle.

Inaugurated in the presence of H.E. Mariam Bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, the new concept store is where health-conscious customers can find over 3,000 items to choose from. Carrefour BIO, aligned with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment’s mission to protect the country’s ecosystems and enhance its food and water security, specialises in healthy and organic products. As well as beverages, there’s a wide selection of fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from 100 percent organic certified farms, poultry and meat that is high in nutrients and without added hormones and organic-fed fish from approved piscaries. Plus, customers will find all their dietary requirements met with the extensive range of vegan, keto, free-from and dairy-free products. The store, a promoter of locally grown produce in line with UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, also houses an innovative hydroponic farm to offset Carrefour’s carbon footprint and bolster food security in the UAE. Plus, beauty, personal and home care items are all available under the same roof.

Carrefour BIO, which is brought to life with fresh greenery and wooden finishes, offers recyclable paper bags and uses biodegradable packaging across its fresh products. This is in line with the leading retailer’s mission to eliminate single-use plastic from its operations by 2025. Additionally, customers will find refilling stations for water and detergents that are quick and easy to use and help to prevent excessive plastic consumption.

The store implements eco-friendly equipment to reduce energy consumption by as much as 15 percent, plus digital price tags connected through WiFi offer a sustainable substitute to printed paper labels. What’s more, all the tables and shelves have been made using recycled pallets, and a pick by weight sections seeks to reduce waste by allowing customers to bring home their desired quantities of nuts, spices and dried fruits in recyclable paper bags.

“Our research tells us that whilst healthy eating is now a huge priority, many consumers limit organic shopping as they perceive it as a more expensive option. This is exactly what Carrefour BIO seeks to solve, offering healthier alternatives at affordable prices to ensure the wellbeing of the entire community,” Hani Weiss, Chief Executive Officer of Majid Al Futtaim Retail, who was also at the opening, said. “Customers can now find healthy products, make conscious decisions whilst dining out and help save the planet one recyclable bag at a time, all under one roof in Carrefour’s BIO store.”
