Hollywood’s Highest Paid Actor Makes $42M More Than Its Highest Paid Actress

Emma Stone and Mark Wahlberg

Forbes has released their report on actor earnings from June 2016 to June 2017 and it’s not looking good for actresses. Predictably and disappointedly, actresses are still pretty low on the list when compared to the worth of male actors. How low? Take a gander at the full list below:

1. Mark Wahlberg, $68 million
2. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, $65 million
3. Vin Diesel, $54.5 million
4. Adam Sandler, $50.5 million
5. Jackie Chan, $49 million
6. Robert Downey, Jr., $48 million
7. Tom Cruise, $43 million
8. Shah Rukh Khan, $38 million
9. Salman Khan, $37 million
10. Akshay Kumar, $35.5 million
11. Chris Hemsworth, $31.5 million
12. Tom Hanks, $31 million
13. Samuel L. Jackson, $30.5 million
14. Ryan Gosling, $29 million
15. Emma Stone, $26 million
16. Jennifer Aniston, $25.5 million
17. Jennifer Lawrence, $24 million
18. Ryan Reynolds, $21.5 million
19. Matt Damon, $21 million
20. Jeremy Renner, $19 million
21. Chris Evans, $18 million
22. Melissa McCarthy, $18 million
23. Chris Pratt, $17 million
24. Mila Kunis, $15.5 million
25. Emma Watson, $14 million
27. Mark Ruffalo, $13 million
28. Cate Blanchett, $12 million
29. Julia Roberts, $12 million
30. Amy Adams, $11.5 million

Mark Wahlberg

Notice anything odd about that list? Mark Wahlberg with $65 million beat out Dwayne Johnson by three million and dwarfed Emma Stone who only made $26 million. That’s an awful lot of money for Marky Mark, but is he really worth all that money? Here are the films he has starred in within the last year:

Emma Stone

Deepwater Horizon
Budget: $156 million
Box Office: $121.8 million worldwide

Patriots Day
Budget: $45 million
Box Office: $50.5 million worldwide

Transformers: The Last Knight
Budget: $217 million
Box Office: $601.1 million worldwide

Screen grabs from Transformers - The Last Knight

It may seem as though Transformers made the most money to be worth Wahlberg’s price, but keep in mind that franchise usually brings in about $800 million - $1 billion globally. The Last Knight marks the series’ weakest box office gross to date. Either Wahlberg isn’t the biggest draw of these movies or he’s choosing the wrong projects to associate with.

But what about Emma Stone? She’s the most expensive actress on the list and she’s still making less than half of what Wahlberg has made. Comparatively, Stone hasn’t been in as many movies in the past year, only making appearances in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and La La Land. And while her supporting role did little to salvage the bomb that was Popstar, her leading role in La La Land helped the film earn over $445 million globally for a film on a $30 million budget. Moreover, she would win the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La La Land

While Wahlberg may have appeared in more movies and already has plenty more lined up for the next year, Stone’s accomplishments for being so high on the list for essentially one movie should not go unnoticed. She was able to beat out Jennifer Lawrence who usually dominates with her worth in franchises. Hopefully with a blockbuster and Oscar under her belt, she’ll able to rise up as a better paid actress. She already has a new movie coming out called Battle of the Sexes, acting opposite Steve Carrell, and will be seen next year leading the historical biopic The Favourite.
