Fashion Review: 5 Timeless Looks from the VMAs 2021

As well as amazing performances by Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Cyndi Lauper, who helped MTV celebrate turning 40, there were some risqué looks that really paid off….

One of the major events known for upping the ante when it comes to shock-factor, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are always chock-a-block with cheeky and bold attention-grabbing red carpet moments. And the fan-voted awards show with some of the most memorable style moments certainly didn’t disappoint this year. From presenters to winners and performers, the stars treated us to a mixture of daring and glam at the Doja Cat-hosted event that was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn Sunday. And after ogling through all the looks, we’ve cherry-picked the best five best-dressed stars, who came ready to dazzle.

Ciara, who introduced Normani before her amazing "Wild Side" performance, looked bewitching in a sexy sheer, lace long-sleeved black number by Tom Ford. The “Level Up” singer’s dress featured velvety bows and an asymmetrical neckline cutout. Styling duo Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn were behind the 35-year-old singer and mum of three’s look from Ford’s AW20 collection.

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo scored three big awards, Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Drivers License" and Performance of the Year, and the newcomer looked like a dream in a strapless pink Atelier Versace dress as she was capping her break-out year. Her eye-catching debut VMA look is a 1940s-inspired look from the Italian house’s spring 2001 couture collection. The heritage gown, made from tulle, features intricate draping across the body and visible boning.

Camila Cabello

Camila Cabello managed to steal the show even before she treated the audience to some extra Latina style dance moves while performing “Don’t Go Yet.” The singer-turned-actor hit the red carpet in a strapless hot pink and scarlet Alexis Mabille gown. And the 24-year-old “Cinderella” star, who was nominated for the Song Of Summer gong, looked like a real-life princess in the gown with a corset-style top. Coming with a floor-length skirt, the dress's standout feature was the oversized bow at the waist.

Kacey Musgraves

Nashville singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves performed for the first time at the awards show, and as well as catching our attention with her rendition of “Star-Crossed” in front of a burning heart, she won in the style stakes. The country crooner looked super glam in her sleeveless royal purple Valentino dress, which featured a ruched skirt. Styled by Erica Cloud, Musgraves, a six-time Grammy Award-winner, completed the couture look from the maison’s autumn 2021 haute couture collection with an oversized matching ostrich feather hat by Philip Treacy for Valentino and red leather gloves.

Madison Beer

Madison Beer caused a real stir after rocking up in the same Dolce & Gabbana dress Beyoncé wore to “The Late Show With David Letterman” in 2003, the same year the look popped up in the Italian house’s spring-summer collection. The 22-year-old “Selfish” singer, who attended as a presenter and Push Performance of the Year nominee, looked extremely pretty in rose pink while reviving the lace-up corset dress with panels of silk and leather. The alluring 18-year-old dress has been worn at the VMAs before by “The Vampire Diaries” star Kat Graham.
