This Arab Female Surgeon Is Boosting Chances Of Complete Tumour Removal

Dr. Taghreed Almahmeed, a ground-breaking surgeon with vast knowledge and a reputation for excellence, is leading the field in the region with this new surgical technique.

Dr. Taghreed Almahmeed has earned a reputation as an innovative leader, specialising in non-invasive cancer surgeries for women. And now the consultant general surgeon at Dubai’s Al Zahra Hospital is one of a handful of UAE surgeons licensed to use a brand-new technique that more accurately locates cancerous tissue, helping increase the chances of complete cancer removal.

By using the surgical imaging technique that exactly pinpoints non-palpable breast tumours, Almahmeed is also reducing the chance of second surgeries and any associated delays in follow-on, life-saving treatment, such as radiation therapy. Another advantage of the method created by an American company, Cianna Medical, is that the more focused, concentrated surgical incision provides a more positive post-surgery cosmetic outcome for the patient.

The procedure being carried out by the Emirati/Bahraini breast surgery specialist entails the use of a new subcutaneous radar reflector. The size of a grain of rice, the reflector is placed under the skin via a small needle and helps to more accurately locate the cancerous growth and its depth under the skin, meaning the surgery only removes what’s necessary from the breast.

“I am delighted to be able to offer this revolutionary new medical technique to women here in the UAE,” the American and Canadian board-certified surgeon said. “Throughout my career I have always strived to adopt the latest global best practices, technologies, and methods to help my patients increase their survival chances.”

Almahmeed, who is armed with nearly three decades of experience, also said the new state-of-the-art reflector offers cancer sufferers a great advantage. “Not only does it allow for more effective surgical intervention in terms of tumour location and removal, but any procedure that reduces time between breast surgery and radiation treatment can make a tangible difference to people’s recovery,” she added.
