This Riyadh District Receives A Sustainability Award

The US Green Building Council (USGB) has recognized the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) for its leadership in sustainability.

The award is given for adhering to the highest sustainability standards, and KAFD also received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification in recognition of its dedication to environmental preservation and social and economic development.

USGB is a non-profit organization founded in 1993 that promotes sustainability in building design, construction, and operation. The awards honor people who create buildings and communities that promote sustainability, health, and quality of life.

KAFD, located in the heart of Riyadh, is the world's largest real estate development project, with over 83 buildings, including 61 towers, and combining residential solutions, work, and entertainment over a total area of more than 1.6 million square meters.

The goal is to conserve natural resources in mind by utilizing treated water for irrigation and cooling systems. The automated waste management system uses an underground pipeline network to collect and sort material that can be reused automatically.

By eliminating the need of transporting waste via trucks, the system contributes to waste recycling and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

The award has elevated KAFD's regional standing and value as a leading authority in implementing the best international sustainability standards, resulting in a 50 percent reduction in consumption costs for services such as the central cooling system.

The sustainable designs are weather-responsive and decrease high temperatures through air flow and indoor cooling systems.

KACD's urban design promotes a healthier lifestyle through features such as the "Al-Wadi" (valley) area. The facility was designed for walking and other recreational services and is located 5.5 meters below ground to provide cooler temperatures.
