The Story Behind This Artwork Selling for $62 Million in Dubai

Dubai based artist, Sacha Jafri’s record breaking work of art entitled “The Journey Of Humanity,” just sold for a whopping $62million USD.

Jafri had unveiled the completed painting in February, and had broken the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest art canvas.

The 17,000 square foot painting was originally to be sold in 70 individual panels in order to raise a target of $30 million for Humanity Inspired, a non-profit which funds charitable initiatives in the educational, digital, connectivity, healthcare and sanitation sectors. Instead, the entire piece was sold for more than double the initial price to Andre Abdoune, the chief executive of Altius Gestion International Holding.

“The Journey Of Humanity” painting was started by Jafri in March 2020 at Dubai’s infamous Atlantis The Palm hotel, and took him seven months, 20 hours a day, 1,065 paintbrushes, and 6,300 liters of paint to complete the enormous painting.

However, not all of the credit can be given to Sacha Jafri as the painting has been layered over by art submissions from children all over the world, as he invited them to share their own artistic emotions conveying how living through the pandemic had affected them.
