On UN Day, Take A Look At The Saudi Women Driving Change Through The UN

Since 1948, October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day, which marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. As this year is being celebrated as a milestone anniversary for the United Nations and its founding Charter, we wanted to highlight six of the many Saudi Arabian women who have been achieving milestones in their own right through their work within various UN organizations.

1. Dr. Tamadur Bint Yousef Al-Rammah

In 2018, Dr. Al-Rammah was appointed to a key role by the United Nations (UN) on elimination of discrimination against women in New York. The member parties of the Convention on Elimination of all kinds of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) elected Dr. Al-Rammah, who at the time of her appointment served as the Kingdom’s deputy minister of labor and social development, as member of the UN committee.

2. HRH Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud

Early this year, renowned Saudi philanthropist Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud became the first-ever regional Goodwill Ambassador for the Arab States by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), an organization that works in over 90 countries to support people in cities and human settlements for a better urban future.

3. HRH Princess Hind Bint Abdul Rahman Al Saud

In May 2020, in line with appointing key figures who display strong leadership skills needed to spearhead the fight against the spread of COVID-19, Princess Hind Bint Abdul Rahman Al Saud was named Ambassador of the Regional Social Responsibility Network, a global campaign that supports the efforts and advocacy work of governments and organizations around the world geared towards curbing the current pandemic.

4. HRH Princess Haifa bint Abdul Aziz Al Mogrin

In January 2020, Saudi Princess Haifa bint Abdul Aziz Al Mogrin was appointed as the kingdom’s permanent representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which designates and protects archaeological and heritage sites, marking another key achievement for Saudi Arabian women, as well as a key cultural win for the Kingdom.

5. Sarah Al-Tamimi

On the occasion of World Trafficking Day, the vice chair of Saudi Arabia’s National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, Sarah Al-Tamimi, was nominated this July by the UN Office in Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for her work in awareness against human trafficking in the Kingdom.

6. HRH Dr. Reem Bint Mansour Al-Saud

Dr. Reem bint Mansour Al-Saud, is a member of the Kingdom’s permanent delegation to the UN in New York since 2015. This lady leads by example; she was representing her country during the UN 2030 agenda negotiations and is considered to this day a major figure in the fight for gender equality in Saudi Arabia and around the world. Dr. Reem holds a master’s degree in social policy and a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern studiesfrom Oxford University.She is a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government where she focuses her work on enhancing Saudi labor policies, especially those concerned with women.
