Chanel’s Cruise 20/21: A Virtual Ethereal Voyage To The Mediterranean

For Virginie Viard, holiday dressing is all about mixing beloved favourites with exciting new additions…

Chanel presented its first big digital fashion show via its website and digital platforms Monday to showcase its cruise 2020/21 collection. Resort collections are significant in the region, and this was supposed to be Creative Director Virginie Viard’s first big travel venture. The plan was to stage the "Balade en Méditerranée" (A Mediterranean Jaunt) collection on the Italian island of Capri on May 7, but due to COVID-19, the French luxury maison “had to adapt” and take viewers on an imagined journey instead. Inspired by scenes from the Italian and French Riviera and “celebrating a free, laid-back allure,” the collection will be available in boutiques from November.

The French luxury maison, which will probably present a capsule haute couture offering virtually too, started getting loyal fans in the mood with a couple of teaser videos by Massimiliano Bomba. These featured calming blue skies, tweeting birds, swaying flowers in the summer’s breeze and rolling waves by a rocky beach.  Karim Sadli’s studio-shot pictures also came with a gorgeous, tranquil landscape designed to transport us to the famous island during cocktail hour, while some of the other images are the work of Julien Martinez Leclerc.

The pieces from the relaxed, low-key collection, some an ode to the 90s, are what a chic yet hip woman would want to pack. Rather than evening wear, Viard suggests day-to-night options, like swimsuits stamped with strewn trompe l’oeil Chanel costume jewels to be worn as bodies and wide-legged trousers with a camellia pattern jacquard.  Bandeau tops also come with a floral print, this time bougainvillea.

Classics from the maison, like the bouclé Chanel skirt suits and jackets and safari-themed jackets in cotton tweed, also come in down-to-earth designs. Pastel leather Bermuda short suits, flat sandals, cropped tie-dye, handkerchief-hemmed skirts and bikini tops make an appearance too. Dress lovers can turn to the long and short lamé dresses, think silver featuring the signature house braid, and wrap styles. What’s more, modest dressers from the region have lots of long-sleeved options that are perfect for layering.

While uncovering the collection, Chanel showed it is moving in a more sustainable direction. Pieces and accessories that are already available to buy in store, including some denim ones, have been included. Plus, in a statement, Viard revealed the storied house only used fabrics they already had. Additionally, some of the pieces can easily be utilised as 2-in-1s, for example some skirts can be worn as strapless dresses.
