Some may call Jeddah, the Middle East’s capital of yoga and we owe a big part of this reputation to Roaa Al Shahhaf, the Kingdom’s first female circus performer. This leading lady is helping Saudi women to destress, reach their fitness goals, and feel more in tune with their bodies. Get to know this female trailblazer that introduced aerial yoga to Saudi Arabia!
Roa’a Al Sahhaf was raised in Paris and graduated from The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in London and has been practicing aerial silks. She climbed up (pun intended) to become a certified coach from prestigious schools in US and Europe.
Al Sahhaf is the brains behind KSA’s first aerial yoga studio that offers a plethora of classes including dancing, pilates, pole dancing, and of course aerial yoga. Her fitness studio opened last year and quickly garnered a fanbase in Al Khalidiya district.
“I was the first Saudi female circus performer. Actually, it was my childhood dream to perform in a circus, and thanks to Taif Season it came true in Circo Americano,” she said. Al Sahhaf always dreamt of showing off her talents in a circus ever since she was a kind and it finally became her profession 2009.
Fitness doesn’t fill all of her time, the 42-year-old is a mom of three and is on a mission to convince more mothers to join the disciplines of aerial sports.
Al Shahhaf hopes to collaborate with gyms and studios to introduce the discipline and she looks forward to throwing more performances to the public. “I want to engage with the Saudi General Entertainment Authority for more performances and shows done by the studio team. I would love to collaborate with gyms and studio owners around Saudi Arabia to include these types of arts and sports in their gym schedules,” she said.
