Visit Poland for the World’s Best Alternative Festive Markets

The festive markets in Poland are truly diverse and matchless…

There's nothing like meandering through twinkling Christmas markets, gorging on festive drinks and treats and picking up some handicrafts. Rather than going to the most popular and well known ones, it might be time to consider some that are a bit off the beaten track yet equally beautiful and less crowded. Poland’s charming old town streets are home to some real gems, and we’ve rounded up the best ones.

Krakow – A World Contender
The fact CNN Travel recently listed Krakow’s Christmas market as one of the best in the world doesn’t’ come as a surprise. This market has everything from local handcrafted ceramics and jewellery to local specialties. Whether it’s the Galician spiced mulled wine or regional and warm oscypek smoked sheep cheese served with cranberry, there’s sure to be something you’ll love.

The market is conveniently close to the main tourist attractions of St. Mary's Basilica, with its famous Veit Stoss altarpiece, the 13th century Krakow Cloth Hall and Wawel Castle, seat of Polish kings.

Wroclaw – A Fairytale-like Atmosphere
You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a fairytale kingdom at Wroclaw’s Old Town Christmas market with its traditional Christmas Pyramid and a Rudolf carousel. Visitors can find craft shops, a Winter Labyrinth and a myriad of stands with local products like Silesian mulled wine with black pepper and vanilla, churros, pancakes, chocolate and plenty of options for gifts for loved ones.

Poznan – A Fun-filled Getaway
As the capital of the Wielkopolska region, Poznan hosts its annual Bethlehem Christmas market every year by the City Hall. This year it lasts for 35 days and is a veritable funfair for all, including an ice sculpture museum, a huge rollercoaster and a 33-metre Ferris wheel.

Gdansk – A European Gem
Users of European Best Destinations rated Gdansk’s Christmas market as the third most beautiful in Europe. Accessibly situated in the city centre, the Gdansk market is distinguished by its Venetian carousel, an advent calendar with a viewing point with a new window opened every day and a giant Christmas pyramid.

As well as the beautifully decorated stalls you can test your skating skills at the outdoor ice rink or ride Santa’s sleigh in virtual reality. Gdansk maritime links can be seen in its charming old town with its Neptune fountain and shipyard, a symbol of Polish freedom and the fight against communism.
