The Tendril Updo: The Big 90s Throwback Hair Trend

While recycling the trend, celebrities are making sure to pull out two flirty and sexy face-framing strands out..

Bored of the same old updo and searching for an ultra trendy one that will have your hair looking effortless, natural and somewhat undone during the holiday season? Well, one way to switch things up is the 90s-inspired updo, which celebrities are finding exciting and endless ways to update. From Rihanna to Katy Perry, Karlie Kloss and Bella Hadid, stars are bringing new life to the prom trend back in the 90s.

While the basic messy bun or top knot piled on the crown of the head hasn’t changed, there are a lot of different ways to rock the stylish updo making a comeback. A lot of A-listers have been seen with a middle parting, and some have gone for a side parting that allows you to clip in a few festive hair accessories for some added pizzazz. Another way to add a holiday spin to the updo is to wrap a red or black velvet ribbon around it, a la Karlie Kloss, or pair it with a festive looking scrunchie or a pretty silk Alice band for a more laid back look.

Whatever you go for, face-framing tendrils are the must-include detail when it comes to the modern version of the nostalgic trend. Another 90s trend, trendils, which help add contour to your face, are having a mega resurgence. And celebrities are turning to cheek-accompanying strands in a variety of ways. Whether it’s curtain bangs, wispy and teeny tiny tendrils or one strand tucked behind one ear to give off an effortless vibe, like Sophie Turner, there’s a variety of widths and textures to contemplate. Worn with all hair legnths, there’s also the option of forming strands to look sharp and pointy, as seen on Elsa Hosk or adding extra width, like Rihanna when she attended her fifth annual Diamond Ball.

Face-framing tendrils look absolutely gorgeous with an updo, however they also look great with ponytails, pigtails or a standout headband. Plus, they are the coolest face hug if you don’t want to wear all your hair down.
