Princess Nourah bint Saad Has Become the First Saudi Arabian Woman To Head a Sports Club

In 2017, Prince Reema Bint Bandar was appointed to head the Saudi Federation for Community Sports (SFCS), making her the first woman in the Kingdom to take on such an important role. This week, another Saudi Arabian woman has raised the bar in the field of sports by becoming the first Saudi woman to be president of a sports club. According to various news sources, Princess Nourah bint Saad has officially acquired the Umbrian football club Spoleto Calcio, in Italy.

Spoleto is a member of Serie D, which is considered the top level of the Italian non-professional football association called Lega Nazionale Dilettanti. The association represents over 12,000 football players and 400 football teams across Italy. According to Arab News, the Spoleto team aims to rise to Serie C in the near future under the Princess’s presidency.

Speaking at a press conference, Princess Nourah thanked her hosts for their hospitality and outlined her ambitions for the team’s future, saying, “Football is a family passion, and Italian football is followed all over the world. This is why I chose to invest in Umbria […] Spoleto is a small, amateur football organization where it is possible to work with the aim of growing and aiming for promotion. But we cannot fail to consider the value and beauty of the city of Spoleto, which is famous throughout the world.”

Saudi Arabia has been more focused on sports and encouraging active living over the last few years, making key appointments, developing programs to encourage women to get into sports, and even engraving its sporting objectives in its overall vision. Indeed, under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plan to diversify the its economy, the country launched of the Quality of Life Program 2020, one of 12 programs designed specifically to strengthen the cultural and economic foundations of the Kingdom. The program has a number of key objectives, two directly related to sports and fitness: the promotion of sporting activities, and excellence in several sports regionally and globally.
