SemSem Channels 70’s Glam in Latest Collection Inspired by a True Fashion Icon

SemSem’s Resort 2020 collection is bringing back 1970s glam. Inspired by socialite and humanitarian, Bianca Jagger’s infamous style and her being a regular face at the notorious club, Studio 54, the brand’s creative director, Abeer Al Otaiba, spoke to Vogue Arabia about why Bianca Jagger inspired her Resort 2020 collection, “Her exquisite taste for luxurious fabrics and rich color and undeniable elegance evoke a sense of style we continue to gravitate towards to this day. Her natural ability to create style moment after style moment also influenced how I developed the collection.” Adding, “Along with her enviable style, I really resonated with the fact that she is also an advocate for defending the social and human rights of disadvantaged women and girls among many other charitable causes she is actively involved with today.”

The glamourous aspect of the resort collection is merged with SemSem’s penchant for luxury fabrics as it offers up hand painted fabrics, unique tie-dyes, vivid hues of pink and blue, on fluid silhouettes balanced out with geometric details, creating a sense of power dressing. Egyptian designer, Otaiba, discussed her creative process, “We also developed new patterns by hand-painting textiles at our New York atelier, creating a new dimension to the aesthetic of the brand.”

So what can we expect to see in the collection? The epitome of luxury and ultimate glamour, SemSem’s Resort 2020 Collection offers up immaculately tailored feather detailed separates, sequin evening slip dresses, pleated gowns, fringing and asymmetrical jumpsuits. Its not all about the evening wear, however, as the Arab label’s additional cotton pieces are enough to carry you from desk to dinner, not limiting the collection to a night at the disco. Abeer Al Otaiba’s Resort 2020 line has evolved since the last, as the brand is introducing newer styles and fabrications, experimenting with jacquard, cashmere, lame, crepe silks and dyed ostrich feathers – maintaining luxury sensibilities.

The SemSem woman, according to the designer herself, is a “woman who feels empowered; she is strong, independent and strives every day to make a difference in the world. She is a successful woman who looks to others for inspiration and guidance, yet ultimately defines her own path to success.”
