Oscars 2019: 5 Hottest Hairstyles

From sophisticated updos to flowy waves and sleek ponytails, the stars provided us with lots of glam evening hair inspiration when they came out to play at the 91st Academy Awards.

Constance Wu

As well as dazzling dresses, jaw-dropping jewellery and must-recreate beauty looks, the mother of all award shows blew our minds with countless high glamour hairstyles. Whether it was Ashley Graham’s bow-coated bun proving nothing brings a trend to life like the Oscars, or Charlize Theron showing how a significant hair transformation is the best way to update your look, celebrities hit Los Angeles’s Dolby Theater sporting some pretty momentous hairdos. We’ve selected the best styles that went straight to the top of our favourites list while the stars celebrated the year’s most exciting films.

Jennifer Lopez’s Controlled Waves

Jennifer Lopez’s dress was hard to ignore, but she was also in the spotlight thanks to her gorgeous hair, which fell down in a waterfall of polished, thick side-swept waves that channelled Old Hollywood. Her tresses looked bouncy, except for the flat roots, and frizz-free. Hairstylist Chris Appleton used an anti-humidity product and a power lifting spray on the multi-talented star’s damp hair before drying it with a paddle brush. He also used hairspray, a curling iron on the top of her hair and a hair product for the ultimate shine. Lopez, who presented an award at the Oscars, also showed off her signature glow and rocked a smoky eye and nude lips.

Charlize Theron’s Dark Bob

The next time you’re hesitant about trying a major hair transformation, just think of Charlize Theron. While she looks amazing as a blonde, Theron debuted a new dark brown hair colour, showing how a hair transformation is best way to change and play with your look.  As well as beautifully pulling off brunette, she sizzled in an entirely new haircut, a sharp bob. While hair colourist Tracey Cunningham was behind Theron's new warm hue, hairstylist Adir Abergel created the new asymmetrical, blunt, side swept and tucked bob for the “Tully” star, who is always fearless and willing to experiment. “I envisioned taking her hair to a luxe and rich shade of brown that would enhance those gorgeous blue eyes," Abergel, who was inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer’s bob in “Scarface” and Julie Christie's hair in “Shampoo,” said. Theron’s eclectic orange-red lipstick created a perfect contrast with her darker look.

Constance Wu’s Sleek Ponytail

We loved Costance Wu’s marigold dress, with its Disney-esque Belle vibes and all. And the bold red lipstick proved to be a match in red carpet heaven. However, the “Crazy Rich Asians” sleek hairstyle also put her in the limelight. Wu’s celebrity hairstylist, Derek Yuen, opted for a bouncy, simple and chic ponytail. First, he applied some control smoothing fluid to the roots, and then he smoothed some elixir through from the mid-lengths to the ends for a frizz-free finish. He then blow dried the actress’s raven tresses and used some matte cream paste, to avoid flyaways and ensure hold,  and smoothing spray, to give a really shiny, healthy look, on the ponytail. The hairstylist also added some loose waves by using a curling iron before fixing the style with a hairspray. The fun hairstyle helped Wu, who presented an award, show off those gorgeous diamond drop earrings.

Gemma Chan’s Casual Yet Alluring Bun

Another “Crazy Rich Asians” star gave us one of the night’s standout hairstyles too. Gemma Chan’s cool yet glamorous bun was the work of celebrity hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein for Olivia Garden. And it was French actress Brigitte Bardot who inspired the timeless low chignon. To maintain texture throughout, the hairstylist used a lifting and volume spray. She then used a curling iron and a teasing brush to create those untidy waves. After using an all in one dry shampoo and texturising paste, Rubenstein tied the British actress’s dark hair into a low ponytail and fixed it with an elastic at the back of her neck, before twisting a few pieces of the ponytail to create a loose knot above the nape of her neck. Lastly, some holding spray was used and strands of hair were left to casually frame Chan’s face.

Ashley Graham’s Custom Bows

Bows have been the accessory du jour lately, and you can add Ashley Graham’s Oscars look to the list of reasons you need to start wearing them. The supermodel, who aced her duties as a red carpet host, oozed glamour and sophistication thanks to her strapless black gown and ballerina bun. The sleek and chic bun stood out as it was accentuated with lots of custom tiny velvet Jennifer Behr bows. Graham's hairstylist, Justine Marjan, used an extra hold hair gel, as well as extra hold hairspray to keep the chignon in place all night. As well as the hairstyle that helped highlight her diamond necklace, we instantly fell for Graham’s Sophia Loren-inspired "structured feline eye and movie star lip," with the help of some rosy nude lipstick, by Kate Synnott.
