New TV Drama ‘Boxing Girls’ Focuses on Young Saudi Women

The MBC Studios programme will resonate with so many young Arab women.

Young Saudi women will take centre stage in the new TV drama “Boxing Girls.” The Arabic programme that will air on MBC channels is Afnan Al Qassimi’s screen-writing debut. And with its gripping storylines and a slew of well-known names in Arab entertainment, including Fatima Al Hosani, Ali Al Sherif and Shaifan Al Otaibi, it is set to be a hit once it hits screens in February.

Directed by Saudi filmmaker Samir Aref, “Boxing Girls” focuses on young female characters and how they cope with life’s struggles, leaving viewers to wonder whether they will overcome the obstacles thrown their way or give in to the pressure. The team spent two months shooting in Abu Dhabi across locations in the UAE capital, before moving to Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, to complete the second phase of production.

Her Excellency Maryam Eid AlMheiri, CEO of Media Zone Authority - Abu Dhabi and twofour54, the company which produced the programme with O3 Productions, said: “This drama production is particularly unique, because it puts a real emphasis on the region’s young talent – both in front of and behind the camera.” She added 65 percent of the Arab world’s population is estimated to be under the age of 30, an important reason to “nurture and develop local talent” so stories resound with audiences everywhere.

Meanwhile, Fadi Ismail, General Manager of O3 Productions, which falls under MBC Studios, said they are creating a one-off Saudi production “for the youth, by the youth.” He also emphasised the important role the young actresses play. “This promising new series is reliant on its young female actors and paves the way for these social media stars to shine on the small screen as well,” he said.

“Boxing Girls” also stars Mila Zahrani, Abdul Aziz Skeirin, Alaa Shaker, Dana Al Salem, Anoud Al Saoud and Abeer Sander. Noura Ezzer, Mohammed Meshaal, Rakan, Zuhair Haider and Zara Al Balushi also flex their acting skills in the series.
