Emir Of Mecca Initiates Fourth Airport Project in the Province, in the City of Al Qunfudah

This week, the Emir of Mecca Prince Khaled Al-Faisal laid the foundation stone of Al-Qunfudah Airport, the fourth airport to be built in the province and the 28th for the Kingdom. The development of the new airport is part of Saudi Arabia’s overall plan to develop and expand its aviation network. The opening ceremony was attended by top officials including Hisham Al-Falih, undersecretary at the Makkah emirate, Jeddah Mayor Saleh Al-Turki, and GACA President Abdul Hakeem Al-Tamimi, as well as other officials and citizens of the region.

According to Saudi Gazette, the Emir explained that the airport is set to be operational within two years, will handle five flights per hour, and will serve 500,000 passengers annually. As reported by Arab News, the facility has been designed to have three halls, a runway, a road network, a control tower, a car park, and service venues. It is to be built on an area of about 24 million square meters, with a passenger lounge that will have an area of more than 20,340 square meters. It is also expected to serve seven provinces and 50 administrative centers related to three coastal and rural areas: Mecca, Al-Baha, and Asir regions.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prince said, “The idea of Qunfudah airport began more than 10 years ago. Studies involving 14 sites were carried out until the current location, spreading over 24 million square meters, in north Qunfudah was chosen.” He also explained that many other development projects are being planned for the region.

Prior to launching the airport project in Al Qunfudah, 14 potential sites were carefully assessed for the project. In addition, the General Authority on Civil Aviation (GACA) determined the proper regulations to ensure air traffic safety, while the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment undertook studies into the climate’s effect on aviation.
