The Best Looks from the 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

If you think bigger is better and love doses of gorgeous colour or some feather action, you’ll surely fall for the best looks we picked from TV’s biggest night.

Glenn Weiss - Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, 'The Oscars' proposed to girlfriend during his acceptance speech

The big wins at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards came from amazing talents like Matthew Rhys, Claire Foy and Peter Dinklage. While Oscar director Glenn Weiss was honoured too, he got a standing ovation from the guests in Los Angeles’s Microsoft Theater for another reason: his epic proposal to his girlfriend during his acceptance speech.

However, we’re focusing on the fact the Emmy Awards were the kind of sartorial spectacle every fashion lover was hoping for. This year the winners, presenters and nominees showed they’re natural born thrillers seeking some drama off the small screen as well. Whether haute couture or pieces that came straight from the spring/summer 2019 shows, there were loads of high-octane looks that made it a night to remember.

Major trends included embroidery, big volume and feathers. Sarah Paulson and Keri Russel donned black dresses featuring feathers, while Penelope Cruz wore another standout piece with plumes. The Spanish beauty’s white gown, which also featured organza flowers, beads and tulle, took almost 300 hours to make. Others who looked like visions in dreamy white included Jessica Biel, in an off-white silk satin organza strapless ballgown embellished with hand cut organza scallops and edged with crystal xilions, and Scarlett Johannson, who showed off a large black flower tattoo.

Daring doses of colour, which stood out more thanks to the sand coloured mat that replaced the traditional red carpet, were also big news. Winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Rachel Brosnahan went for a stunning scarlet gown, and Sandra Oh rocked a rich ruby red liquid silk velvet gown, featuring plunging neckline and lattice glass bead edging. Another fashion reference who opted for a bright pop of colour was Allison Janney, who radiated in a sparkling purple dress. Alison Brie’s canary yellow creation, with Swarovski crystals and cut-out detail, also caught our attention for all the right reasons, as did Tiffany Haddish’s multi-coloured sensation.

Additionally, it was hard to miss seeing what seemed like every shade of pink. Thandie Newton, who won Outstanding Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, made Barbie pink look super sophisticated in a ready-to-wear gown that recently appeared on the catwalk during New York Fashion Week. And fashion risk-taker Tracee Ellis Ross proved you can wear something vibrant and voluminous in her hot pink knockout with oversized puff sleeves, which were worn draped off-the-shoulder. Meanwhile, her TV daughter Yara Shahid looked extremely pretty in pink in a gown featuring a bold floral motif and a plunging neckline.
