It’s an Illusion: Sheikh Zayed in Holographic Form

2018 marks the 100th birthday of His Highness, late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates.

To commemorate him as the king and leader, a Dubai based production house, New Dimension Productions (NPD) brought him back to life in the form of a very realistic looking, digital 3D hologram on Instagram.

The hyperreal hologram was applauded by online users who watched the clip and many commented on how much the illusion resembled His Highness, who in the video, is seen to be giving one of his motivational speeches.

This has been a first for the region and being able to depict the leader as a digitized 3D model has been the result of thorough research on the late Sheikh. The team at NPD were meticulous in their study of Sheikh Zayed, studying the tone of his voice, facial expressions and gestures.

NPD also stated that being able to remaster the recorded speech was challenging due to the fact that “different sources of recordings had to be matched and synced.”

The founder and CEO of the production company, NPD, Hasan M. Hina stated that, “The NDP team pushed the boundaries of 3D photo-realistic modeling and animation, compositing and Visual effects to a whole new level; bringing forth a hologram that can reflect the astonishing persona of His Highness. It is also a tremendous honor to produce a hologram of H.H. on the occasion of the Year of Zayed, which gave us an additional motivation to perfect it.”

The realistic looking holograms are still a reasonably new technology but has been used previously to bring rapper Tupac Shakur, who passed away in 1996, back to life at Coachella festival in America back in 2012. Actor and musician, Jared Leto also made a holographic appearance last July at San Diego’s Comic-Con to promote his new film.
