Abdulhalim Radwi Award Celebrates Creative Female Talent in Saudi Arabia

In an evening marked by artistic celebration and recognition, the Abdulhalim Radwi Award recently announced its winners at the University for Business and Technology in Jeddah. This prestigious award, established in 2022 by Dr. Maha Radwi, daughter of the late renowned Saudi artist Abdulhalim Radwi, is a testament to the thriving artistic spirit in Saudi Arabia.

The annual competition, a collaborative effort between the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts and the University of Business and Technology, seeks to honor individuals who embody the innovative spirit, boundless imagination, and unwavering commitment to creativity that Abdulhalim Radwi was known for.

The 2023 edition of the award saw an impressive array of talent, drawing in over 70 participants. A diverse and elite panel of Saudi artists judged the competition. The finalists, numbering thirty, were part of an enriching experience that included both theoretical and practical workshops, along with live sessions, fostering a dynamic and interactive artistic environment.

During the ceremony, the top 10 artists were honored, sharing a prize fund of SR50,000 ($13,000). This recognition not only highlights their exceptional skills and creativity but also marks a significant milestone in their artistic careers.

Dr. Maha Radwi, serving as the award’s secretary-general, expressed her elation at the success of the competition's second year. She emphasized the award's lofty goals and its transformative impact on the plastic arts movement in Saudi Arabia. “The goal of our award is to continue to expand the legacy, philosophy, aesthetics, and values of my father, the pioneer of contemporary arts in Saudi Arabia, and these creative artists do just that,” she stated.

Mohammed Al-Subaih, the director of the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts in Jeddah, also expressed pride in hosting the award. He highlighted the significant role Abdulhalim Radwi played in the Saudi plastic arts movement, making this award a fitting tribute to his legacy.

Following the announcement of the winners, an exhibition was held showcasing the works of all participating artists. This exhibition not only provided a platform for the artists to display their talents but also offered attendees a glimpse into the diverse and rich landscape of contemporary Saudi art.

The Abdulhalim Radwi Award, in its essence, is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of artistic innovation and a beacon of inspiration for future generations of Saudi artists. It continues to uphold and propagate the artistic values and vision of one of Saudi Arabia’s most esteemed artists, nurturing and elevating the kingdom's art scene.
