Stars In Black: Fashion At The Golden Globes 2018

The stars wore black to stand in solidarity with victims of sexual abuse.

The start of awards season, and lots of fabulous fashion to save on Pinterest, saw celebrities donning black to make a united statement. Our favourite style fiends wanted the focus to be on the important issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality rather than fantasy couture while walking down the red carpet Monday during the 75th Golden Globes.

In solidarity with #Time’s Up, the initiative launched to combat sexual workplace harassment in the film industry and everywhere else, every female attendee, except three, wore a black outfit or dress to honour victims of sexual abuse. Many #Time’s Up pins were also spotted on lapels in support of the project. As many high profile Hollywood A-listers are involved in the movement, which aims to bring about change for women, the awards event, held at The Beverly Hilton, Beverly Hills, was the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on it.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that black is one of the chicest colours, as the stars confirmed while arriving. The inky hue has been lauded by some of the most famous designers. “I love black because it affirms, designs and styles,” Yves Saint Laurent said. “A woman in a black dress is a pencil stroke.” And while Christian Dior declared it could be worn at any time, any age and for “almost any occasion,” Karl Lagerfeld believes you can never be over dressed or under dressed in a LBD. What’s more, according to Nieman Marcus, “Women who wear black lead colourful lives.”

So Whether it was winner Elisabeth Moss’s midi dress with a jewelled collar, Angelina Joilie’s flowing gown with feather trimming, or Issa Rae showing what she’s got in thigh-high slit and plunging neckline, each female star made a symbolic yet stylish declaration in her own unique way.

Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive

Tracee Ellis Ross knew just how to accessorise her satin column dress (with a matching headwrap), Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kerry Washington and Laura Dern shimmered through the evening, and Kendall Jenner (yes, she was there somehow) proved she’s all about the drama with a dramatic dipped hem dress featuring layers of tulles. We also loved Peneloped Cruz’s embellished Chantilly lace off-the-shoulder ball gown with draped silk gazar bustle and the column gown Zoe Kravitz rocked.

Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon was very elegant in a one-shouldered number, while Halle Berry, Helen Mirren and Catherine-Zeta Jones all wore Zuhair Murad. Some actresses, like Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, Mandy Moore and Katherine Langford, added some silver sparkle or a dash of a different colour.
