This Is Jebel Fihrayn In Saudi Arabia, Also Known As “The Edge Of The World”

Ever wondered what it must feel like to be at the edge of the world? Well, stand at the top of Jebel Fihrayn in Saudi Arabia and you might just see how that feels. Named “The Edge of the World” by many who visit it, Jebel Fihrayn is located over 90 kilometers northwest of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and is one of the kingdom's most breathtaking natural wonders. Offering vistas of the vast desert landscape down below, standing on the top of Jebel Fihrayn gives you a complete, uninterrupted view of the world around you.

To get to the top of this Edge of the World, which is said to rise about 1,000 feet above ground, it takes some 15 to 30 minutes, and the hike up is filled with stunning wildlife and scenery to enjoy while you ascend. It is also said that if you pass through an area called “the window,” you can go from there to the lower plateau, and if you continue all the way to the top, you will be rewarded with views as far as the eye can see.

Amazingly, the area around Jebel Fihrayn used to be a river bed, so as you walk around, you might stumble upon fossils while exploring the surroundings. Today, you will notice instead a dried river weaving across the area, with camels and herders traveling through.

Jebel Fihrayn actually makes up part of the Tuwaiq Escarpment, an area stretching over 600 kilometers through central Saudi Arabia. You might not realize it at first, but this landmark witnessed some historical milestones. In addition, Tuwaiq Escarpment once overlooked an ancient trade route between Yemen and the Levant.

Before going to Jebel Fihrayn, there are a few things to keep in mind. Even though Tuwaiq Escarpment is easy to find on the map, getting there won't be. With difficult terrains, it is best to go using an SUV and GPS. Also, be sure to pack enough food and water supply, and proper gear for traversing the tougher terrains of Jebel Fihrayn.

This natural wonder can be visited any time of the year, but, for favorable temperatures, and clear view of picturesque scenery, it is highly recommended to go either in fall or winter. There is also a campsite at Acacia Valley, a great opportunity to experience the area at night.
