Farewell To Rihanna’s Fenty Fashion Line

It didn’t last long – but we were most definitely here for it!

Having launched just two years ago, with the backing of conglomerate, LVMH, Rihanna’s edgy fashion label, Fenty, is closing down. LVMH continues to support Fenty Skin, Fenty Beauty, and her highly coveted lingerie line, Savage x Fenty, along with private equity investor L Catterton, which raised investment funds of $115 million for the lingerie line under RiRi’s Fenty umbrella of brands.

Speaking to WWD, Rihanna and LVMH spoke about the shuttering, for the moment, of the high end contemporary fashion line she helmed, “LVMH and Rihanna reaffirm their ambition to concentrate on the growth and the long-term development of the Fenty ecosystem, focusing on cosmetics, skincare and lingerie.” It was also mentioned that the fashion line could make a comeback under “better conditions.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has left many businesses in unfamiliar territory. prior Prior global lockdowns, Rihanna spent much of her time her Paris and Italy ateliers where she led her design teams and could no longer do so. A smart and mindful move by the designer who previously stated in an interview that she has a hands-on approach to her design process and that she “knows what’s gone into the making of every single piece.”

Not having had access to where her line was being produced just as her luxury clothing brand launched didn’t sit well for the financial side of the business and the label didn’t quite take off as well as her skin, beauty and lingerie ranges.

On January 1st, Fenty stopped posting on social media and decided to not go ahead with launching its micro collection in November last year. The fashion brand last marketed its second collaboration with highly sought after shoe designer Amina Muaddi. The partnership saw the Fenty fashion aesthetic merged with Muaddi’s rather seductive and ultra-femme shoe styles.

Rihanna’s LVMH backed fashion label was groundbreaking and made history as Fenty became the first to be led by a black woman under the luxury conglomerate.
