COVID-19 vs. Fashion Week: What are the changes?

Cancelled or postponed? Here’s what we know so far on the big four…

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the fashion world is also coming to a halt with our favorite fashion capitals cancelling shows, postponing, or going digital. We've listed all the current updates on New York, Paris, London, and Milan fashion weeks. And if you're feeling some fashion wanderlust (because same), you can always check out our previous coverage of our favorite runaways. In the meantime, stay home safe and let’s hope to see some designer magic on our screens soon!

Paris Haute Couture Week & Paris Fashion Week

The French fashion’s governing organization, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM), has officially canceled the couture and men’s fashion weeks. Men’s SS2021 shows were initially scheduled from the 23rd to 28th of June and Paris Couture Week just a week later from the 5th-9th of July. The FHCM sent out a public statement to the entire fashion industry, which read: “In light of the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic worldwide, strong decisions are required to ensure the safety and health of houses, their employees, and everyone working in our industry. The Fédération is actively working with its members on possible alternatives,” which could mean that the shows might take place on a different platform (hello digital!).

New York Fashion Week

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) postponed men’s fashion week until further notice and urged designers to cancel their resort shows, which usually take place in May and June.

Milan Fashion Week

Italy’s shows also postponed its men’s shows, they which will hopefully happen after September’s womenswear week. Camera Nazionale della Moda promised the launch of menswear collections on digital platforms and said: “We are working on new digital formats and new ways of encounter, in order to create a new storytelling on the days originally scheduled for the Milan Men’s Fashion Week: B2B and B2C platforms for the benefit of brands, luxury companies, and all the other players in the fashion industry.” As well as reckoning that designers would have been in the process of production of their Spring 2021 collections, CNMI has guaranteed that the organization’s 800 Milan showrooms will support fashion sales during June’s Milan Market Week. Be sure to stay tuned with Pitti Uomo’s launch of their unique virtual showroom!

London Fashion Week

The British Fashion Council (BFC) cancelled the men’s fashion week in London, which was set to happen in June. Similar to many other initiatives supporting creatives across the industry: BFC set up a fashion fund to help mitigate the negative impacts of COVID-19 on the industry. With the coronavirus hard hitting many industries around the world, fashion is one of them that’s suffering as designers cannot produce their next collections without their workforces.
