Huji Cam: The Photo App You Didn’t Know You Needed

You can zip back to 1998 with Huji Cam, the app celebrities have been using to flood our Instagram feeds with authentic retro-looking snaps.

If you love everything retro and looking for a new way to spruce up your Instagram feed, just like almost everything these days, there’s an app for that. Celebrities and influencers, from Selena Gomez and model Jasmine Sanders to beauty guru Kristen Noel Crawley, have been posting retro-looking pictures using Huji Cam. One of Gigi Hadid’s best friends and French It PR girl Fanny Bourdette Dondon has also been using Huji, pronounced just like Fuji. The similarity in names probably isn’t just a coincidence as the free app copycats the same kind of look that came out of first Fujifilm Quicksnap disposable camera.

While the pictures look just like they were taken on a bona fide old school disposable camera, you definitely don’t have to go through the rigmarole of developing the film, scanning and uploading. The photo-editing app, which is available for iPhone and Android, is easy and fun. The photos on Huji Cam, which can be described as an enhanced version of Gudak, are crisp and high-contrast. The app also adds reddish, warm tones, default hyper-saturated colour and a grainy effect, turning any ordinary photo into a beautiful disposable camera-style image. For an authentic late 90s touch, photos can be assigned haphazard light leaks and glares, which can really enhance them. And of course, a retro photo wouldn’t be complete without a date stamp, which there’s an option for. What’s more, you can choose to stay in 2018, or if 1998 was a mega year for you, just like it was for the movie “Titanic,” you can time travel back to it.

Perhaps the coolest part about using the app is that each photo is a complete surprise, just like the days when people just hoped for the best. The filtering is completely random so you don’t have any control over the final results, giving photos an arty and interesting feel for those who are a bit tired of the airbrushed-perfect kind.

The interface may look like a disposable camera, but the viewfinder is something else. You can use the tiny thing as if you are actually working a disposable camera, but if you don’t feel like squinting you can actually tap it to expand so can easily see what your phone is zooming in on for better shots. And while you can’t tap to focus, Huji has your back as it works really well with a narrow depth of field. You can also pay a tiny fee for some extras, like importing photos from your camera roll that you didn’t take with the app to give them the same effects.
