Ibrahim Bugis, a highly accomplished Saudi artist, recently showcased his latest exhibition at the Abstract Art Gallery in Riyadh during March. His paintings are characterized by the inclusion of classic symbols and Arabic calligraphy, transformed into abstract forms, reflecting his unique artistic style.
In an interview with Arab News, Bugis expressed his preference for handmade arts over digital ones. His artistic journey began with manual creations that stemmed from his mind, resulting in creative and original images. He draws from experience to craft distinctive works.
Bugis's art also adorns the walls of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, where a 36-meter-long mural takes passengers on a cultural voyage. The vibrant artwork offers a visual glimpse into the history of the Red Sea port city, incorporating shades of blue and red to represent the sea. A compelling and modern picture of Jeddah's character is created by the harmonic blending of Islamic and arabesque themes with images of structures, mosques, and palms.
Throughout his career, Bugis has actively taken part in more than 50 exhibitions both within and outside the Kingdom. His work has been showcased in various prestigious events, including the Association of Space Explorers' exhibition in Riyadh in 1991, the 1998 Saudi Cultural Week in Spain, and the Saudi Fine Art and Heritage exhibition in the Czech Republic in 1999. Notably, Bugis received the Jeddah City Medal in 1992 and won the Coca-Cola logo award during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Born in Makkah in 1953, Bugis discovered his passion for art at a young age, delighting in scribbling and drawing on any available surface. Encouraged by his art teacher and the Culture and Arts Association, he pursued his talent, consistently seeking opportunities to refine his skills and draw inspiration from global art galleries and museums.
In the present day, Bugis recognizes the Kingdom's supportive environment for artists, with institutions like the Saudi Society for Fine Arts and the Misk cultural and arts foundation providing valuable platforms for talented individuals to showcase their creativity.
