Patile Kalan Toasts the Amalfi Coast in New Jewellery Collection

Patile Kalan’s latest jewellery collection allows a younger but already very style-savvy woman to take the vibrant colours of the Amalfi Coast everywhere she goes.

Mesmerised by all the beauty and colours the Amalfi Coast’s mountains, forests, sea and charming towns have to offer, Patile Kalan felt compelled to share her fascination through her imaginative jewellery. She has added vibrant, handpicked semi-precious gemstones like morganite topaz, rhodolite, London blue topaz and rainbow moonstone to her 14-karat line, which is perfect for layering and everyday jewellery styles. What’s more, the effervescent gemstones, which are accented with diamonds, are paired with intricate filigree and prong designs, creating a tone that is reminiscent of the renowned Mediterranean coastline’s scenic sunrise and sunset views.

AboutHer’s Roula Allam chats to Kalan, who has been designing beautiful yet easy-to-wear and affordable pieces for the KALAN by Suzanne Kalan range, about the new collection. The designer also talks about creating for a younger age group and following in her renowned mother’s footsteps.

You introduced KALAN by Suzanne Kalan to appeal to a younger age group. What do you feel draws in youngsters the most?
The KALAN By Suzanne Kalan collection is set in 14-karat gold and features semi-precious gemstones with accents of diamonds. The line is very colourful and reaches a younger audience because of the price point. The collection showcases classic and modern designs that everyone can add to their daily wardrobe. My collection is also perfect for layering and stacking, which also appeals to a younger age group.

You’ve been designing for the brand for around five years now. What has changed in the jewellery world during that time?
I feel like jewellery has become something that is more accessible in the last five years. Women are buying jewellery for themselves instead of waiting for it to be purchased for them, which is really interesting to see. More and more women are incorporating jewellery into their everyday wardrobe as opposed to saving it for just special occasions. Also, I’m finding that men are becoming more comfortable with purchasing jewellery for their significant others.

You debuted a new collection called “Amalfi” at COUTURE 2017. What inspired you so much while you were at the Amalfi Coast in Italy?
My new collection is inspired by my travels to the Amalfi Coast. It was one of the best trips I have ever had and the beauty of the Mediterranean coastline is forever imprinted in my mind.
The 14-karat line has always been focused on offering women a wide range of colour options to complement their wardrobes. The “Amalfi” collection continues to feature layering and everyday jewellery styles, but also incorporates new colours that were inspired by my trip to Italy. I have added a new selection of cuts and gemstones to the line, including rainbow moonstone and morganite topaz. The vibrant gemstones are paired with intricate filigree and prong designs that are reminiscent of the scenic sunrise and sunset views of the Mediterranean coastline.

Tell us about the handpicked semi-precious gemstones and the design ethos in the collection.
Gemstone colours and shapes inspire me the most when I am starting to design a new collection. After my trip to the Amalfi Coast, I wanted to find a way to capture the changing colours of the water and skyline. My mum and I travel all around the world looking for the best gemstones for our collections. I finally came across the right colours and started designing the “Amalfi” collection.

I also like to incorporate simple statements in my designs. Many of my designs feature colourful, transparent stones that highlight the intricate prong designs.

Do you have a favourite piece from it?
My favourite piece is the coloured stacking band. My mother’s “Fireworks” Collection inspired it, but it has a younger and colourful twist. When I first designed the bands, I had planned on making a variety of colours but only as a one-of-a-kind piece. Once I saw the final product and it became such a hit, I decided to make it a piece we can (and have had to) produce over and over.

How do you want women to feel when wearing your jewellery?
I want women to feel beautiful when they wear my jewellery. I don’t design or add anything to my collection that I wouldn’t wear myself, which is extremely important to me.

Did you always know you were going to follow in your mother’s footsteps?
My mum started her own company just after I was born, and she would bring me to the office all the time. Even when I went to grade school, I would come to the Suzanne Kalan studio after school and play with the gemstones and sketch. I was always interested in geometric artwork and I was great at math. I loved seeing my mum design and the development of the final product.

I always loved coming to the studio with my mum, but I also had a lot of different interests. I enjoyed the math and sciences and wanted to be independent with my career choice. The problem was that I was also very interested in jewellery, production and the business over all. I would help my family at the office when I wasn’t in class, which caused me to become a very important part of the business. That is when I decided I had to join the business full time. I tried to avoid a true passion of mine … but I didn’t get very far (thank goodness)!

It’s been amazing to be part of the family business, and I have been able to see the brand make great strides and grow internationally. I have also had the chance to travel all around the world with my mum. In fact, we’re prepping for Jewellery Asia Malaysia in just a couple of weeks!

What was the most valuable thing you learned from her?
My mother taught me a lot about dedication and perseverance. She never gave up on her vision and always pushed forward even in extremely difficult circumstances. She also taught me that some of the most rewarding lessons are the ones that help you overcome your fears. I have come to learn that I have grown the most from the challenging experiences I have faced and the fears that I have overcome.

What’s the most meaningful piece of jewellery you own?
This is such a tough one! Every piece of jewellery I have has been gifted to me from my parents or grandparents, so it all means a lot to me. If I had to choose one, it would be a one-of-a-kind ring in the shape of a flower my parents gifted me for my 22nd birthday. I remember seeing an all diamond flower ring when I was very young and falling in love with it. After that, I would always point out special ones like this to my mum. I was so excited when they gave me mine. It is made of pink and purple sapphires and white diamonds all set in 18K rose gold.

What kind of jewellery wouldn’t you be caught dead in?
I always keep my jewellery choices in the family! I only wear jewellery that my mum or I have designed (or the beautiful pieces my grandparents have gifted me over the years).

My mum designed a new collection called “Cascade Fireworks,” and the line features many delicate jewellery pieces with baguette diamond charms. I’ve been wearing her hoop earrings every day; I can’t take them off!

How do you see things evolving for you in the future?
The 14-karat line has been very well received in the U.S. and Europe. I’m starting to see more interest in my collection in the Middle East, so I am looking forward to expanding my collection in that region.
