Charlize Theron May Return to Mad Max

Charlize Theron is certainly shining bright in 2017, playing the terrorist villain of Fate and the Furious and the lead of the upcoming Atomic Blonde. But what’s next for the A-list actress? Perhaps a return to the Mad Max post-apocalyptic future?

Theron became the standout actress in 2015’s award-winning action romp Mad Max: Fury Road as the female warrior Furiosa. Going up against Tom Hardy as the titular Max, she proved to be a stellar force in an amazing movie filled with colorful desert vistas, fantastically designed cars and heaps of chaotic violence. After the film’s success, director George Miller mentioned that he’d be interested in developing a spin-off for the character of Furiosa. And it sounds like Theron is down for that as well.

In an interview with Variety, Charlize revealed that she is not only interested in returning to a Mad Max movie of her very own, but that a script may already be ready for her to come back.

“I’d love to. There were three scripts. They were written as back stories to Max’s character and to Furiosa’s character. But at the end of the day, this thing lives and breathes with [director] George [Miller]. I think Warner Bros. knows that. We are all waiting for him to show us the way.”

Theron’s performance as Furiosa became a celebrated icon for her feminist angle of the heroine saving a collective of slave-wives from the monstrous Immortan Joe. This is due in part to Miller receiving consultation on the script for a female perspective, but mostly for Theron’s powerful performance.

A Furiosa film is still up in the air, but that’s not the only gig Theron is waiting on. When asked by Variety on her return for the next Fast and Furious movie, following her performance in Fate of the Furious, that role is uncertain as well.

“I don’t know. I have no idea if they’ll have me back. Look, I love everybody at Universal. We’re going to have conversations. We’ll see where it goes.”

It now seems to be a race as to which role she’ll be called back for first. Another Mad Max movie is still uncertain, but the next Fast and the Furious movie already has a tentative date set for the next movie. So if a Furiosa movie is to be made in the near future, Warner Bros. needs to shift into high gear if they don’t want to find themselves scrambling for Theron when she’s really busy. There’s also no telling how many more roles Theron will be occupied with in the near future, already shooting two new movies for next year.

Whether she’s targeting street racers or riding alongside them, we cannot wait to see Theron back on screen in the biggest of blockbusters. Personally, however, I’m rooting for that Furiosa movie as the world of Mad Max is just too gritty and fun to pass up a second helping.

Charlize Theron will appear in Atomic Blonde this July.
