US First Daughter Ivanka Trump lauds progression on Saudi female empowerment

During her official visit to Saudi Arabia, accompanying her father US President Donald Trump, First Daughter Ivanka Trump participated in a roundtable discussion with a group of leading Saudi women. Speaking on the panel, which was held on the sidelines of the Riyadh Summit, Ivanka said she was “inspired” by the progress of female empowerment in the Kingdom.

“The stories of Saudi women, such as yourselves, catalysing change, inspire me to believe in the possibility of global women’s empowerment,” Ivanka told the women gathered at the discussion.

Sharing a post-discussion tweet, Ivanka tweeted, “Today I met with Saudi Arabian women leaders and learned directly of their accomplishments, challenges and vision for the future.”

The first daughter even took to Instagram to share a photo with the Saudi women leaders to which she captioned, “This morning I participated in a powerful and constructive dialogue with an amazing group of Saudi Arabian women leaders. The need to empower and engage women transcends borders and cultures. Whether in the United States or Saudi Arabia, we must recognize that empowering women is key to driving economic transformation.”

Ivanka who serves as an official advisor in the White House to her father President Trump said, "You stand on the front lines in the fight for gender equality. Saudi Arabia’s progress is encouraging, but there is still work to be done – and freedoms and opportunities to continue to fight for.

“Around the world women continue to achieve unprecedented levels of rights and freedoms,” she added.

The delegation of Saudi women was headed by Princess Reema bint Bandar Al-Saud, vice president of the Saudi General Authority for Sports Planning and Development. Discussions included global women’s economic and empowerment initiatives.

Also present at the discussion was World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, who announced that Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates would pledge $100 million to his organization's facility devoted to global female entrepreneurship.

According to an official from the World Bank, Kim was invited by the Saudi Arabian government to attend the Riyadh Summit and subsequently attended the event with the first daughter.

"We are very grateful for the incredibly generous contributions from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Ivanka Trump's powerful advocacy for these issues," Kim said in a statement provided by the White House.
