Selva Sonali describes herself as a curious inventor, sugar enthusiast, and bubbly designer. As a confectionery artist and graphic designer based in Quebec, Canada, Sonali has spent years baking up a sugary realm of fantastic donuts, and she has managed to do so using only all-natural ingredients. When she can’t find organic alternatives, this sugar queen uses plant-based dyes to create the awesome colors her treats have come to be known for.

Selva Sonali describes herself as a curious inventor, sugar enthusiast, and bubbly designer. As a confectionery artist and graphic designer based in Quebec, Canada, Sonali has spent years baking up a sugary realm of fantastic donuts, and she has managed to do so using only all-natural ingredients. When she can’t find organic alternatives, this sugar queen uses plant-based dyes to create the awesome colors her treats have come to be known for.

On her website, the donut master explained her reasons for choosing natural ingredients rather than the readily available options on every supermarket shelf:

“In 2015, I started writing down recipes for this cookbook project. As I continued to fine- tune my book in 2017, I joined Instagram and began to share my donut creations. After being constantly asked how I bake donuts, I realized many of the baking ingredients were not eco-friendly or far too processed. The food industry is flooded with processed food, as well as artificial flavours, sweeteners, colours, and preservatives. So I started to spend time researching and partnering with like-minded food-lovers, recipe testers, developers, and food scientists who share my vision of creating products that are a healthier alternative.”

A quick glance through her Instagram profile will have you excited and craving for days. She not only makes delightful donuts, she also dabbles in cake popsicles, cupcakes, and cookies, and has started experimenting with painting directly on food.

I just looked at my feed and wow. I never expected to grow to 10K, you made my day! Thank you so much for your support, kind comments and for always checking out my work. I am beyond ecstatic to have you around and I can’t wait to unleash more of my crazy, “out there” ideas. A lot of you have messaged me asking who I am and about 75% of you voted on my poll that you wanted to see how I look like. My name is Selva Sonali and this is what I look like - on a good day! HA!I consider myself a designer of all sorts because my interests constantly change except for my love of binging on sweets. I can’t sit still for a good 5mins to save my life. I thrive on variety and patterns. I love sugar and need my fix everyday, whether it be good quality chocolate or a pastry. I love bright lively colors. I live for sketching and planning. And finally, fortunately I am a healthy gal and I’m still going strong pumping out hundreds of donuts per year while working full time in a day job This is me in a nutshell. I’m hungry now so I’m going to fly, but thank you all so much again!

Throughout her years working on colorful treats using the most natural ingredients she can find, Sonali explains that her ultimate goal is to eventually “create a positive brand using environmentally conscious ingredients and materials associated with confectionery art and home décor, all while bringing joy to the planet one sweet treat at a time.”
